Although the Nugget essentially created its own category of furniture, trends in categories of furniture similar to the Nugget and trends in furniture sales overall can be helpful to consider.

 

US furniture and home furnishings e-commerce revenue has consistently increased since 2013, and is projected to continue to increase steadily.  US furniture e-commerce revenue was 17.7 (in billions of US dollars) in 2013, and is forecasted to grow to 32.5 in 2018.  There is a steady increase of about 3 billion dollars between each fiscal year.  Overall, the online furniture retail market is performing well and only becoming more profitable.  

 

Furniture and home furnishing sales account for approximately 6.7% of total US e-retail sales.  In 2013, sales accounted for 6.7% of total US e-retail sales with a projection of 6.6% in 2018.  There is projected to be virtually no change in this specific market, meaning this category has a relatively established and reliable market share in US e-retail.  

 

More generally, we can look at furniture and bedding spending in the US overall (not specifically online sales).  Although the Nugget exists solely online, looking at overall spending trends can give an idea of general interest in purchasing this type of product.  Total furniture and bedding spending amounted to about 94.9 billion US dollars in 2013.  Percentage of sales by segment are listed below for all existing segments that the Nugget may fall under.  Bolded are those most applicable to the Nugget.

 

  • Stationary sofas/sofa sleepers: 15% of furniture and bedding sales

  • Entertainment furniture: 7%

  • Youth, other adults bedroom: 6%

  • Motion sofas: 5%

How is the category defined?

 

Nugget is the first of its kind, creating a category of furniture positioned somewhere between futons and bean bags.  The Nugget is a portable and versatile couch designed to marry full function with ease and comfort.  The brand exists in the relatively unclaimed territory of online retail for playroom furniture.  Furniture is among the last of products to join the e-retail movement.  The Nugget works to be innovative in capatilizing on this new frontier with items created for easy shipping and assembly straight out of the box.
